RÚVZ shocks with a revelation about the Slovaks’ favorite delicacy: You won’t believe what THIS thing does to your brain and blood pressure!

Edible chestnuts are rich in nutrients that are associated with many health benefits. They contain vitamin C or group B vitamins. They are also a source of various minerals and fiber. Among other things, they also contribute to the support of the cardiovascular system. The Regional Office of Public Health (RÚVZ) in Bratislava drew attention to this on the social network.

“Chestnuts contribute well to supporting a healthy cardiovascular system, with potassium and magnesium helping to regulate blood pressure. By consuming chestnuts, we support healthy brain function, as they are rich in B vitamins, which are directly linked to proper neurological development and function. “Potassium helps increase blood flow to the brain and thus supports the health of the nervous system,” experts noted.

They pointed out that edible chestnuts also contain fiber. “It helps to accumulate stool, facilitates its passage and thus helps prevent constipation, contributes to a feeling of fullness, which can help with weight control,” clarified. Chestnuts are also good for bone health. They also help control blood sugar levels. “Although they contain a larger amount of carbohydrates, the fiber contained in them ensures that the body absorbs carbohydrates slowly, thus helping to prevent a sharp rise in blood sugar levels.” explained Natália Šranková from the RÚVZ health consultancy.

The consumption of edible chestnuts is especially popular in the period from September to December, especially during Christmas. It is recommended to heat treat them. “Raw chestnuts have a high content of tannins, which can cause digestive problems such as stomach irritation or nausea or other complications in people who are sensitive to them, especially in people with liver or kidney disease,” Šranková added.
