Idafro asks jurors to take a course on racism – 05/22/2026 – Panel

Idafro (Institute for the Defense of the Rights of Afro-Brazilian Religions) filed this Thursday (21) with the National Council of Justice () a representation requesting the application of a protocol for trials with a racial perspective to jury courts across the country.

Among the proposals, the protocol requires the implementation of a distance course for jurors, with content aimed at confronting racial stereotypes that impact judicial decisions.

The institute advocates that jurors undergo basic training on racism, racial profiling, stereotypes and their effects on the construction of the so-called “intimate conviction” of jurors.

In its representation, the institute argues that Justice, and even in decisions of the , recognizes the impacts of racism in criminal prosecution and in the formation of judgments.

“It is unreasonable for jurors responsible for deciding on people’s freedom and lives to be subjected to a model that completely ignores the impacts of racial stereotypes in the formation of conviction”, says the president of Idafro, Hédio Silva Jr.

“What we propose is a pedagogical, preventive measure that is compatible with the Constitution and international human rights treaties ratified by Brazil.”
