The team from Rio Grande do Sul ended the group stage of the continental tournament in second place in group F, with 11 points
O Grêmio drew 2-2 with Montevideo City Torque on Tuesday night (26), at Arena do Grêmio, in Porto Alegre, in a match valid for the last round of the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana. The team led by Luís Castro needed victory to obtain a direct place in the next phase, but conceded equality with goals from Salomón Rodríguez and Pizzichillowhile Gabriel Mec and Carlos Vinícius scored for the home team.
The outcome of the game left Grêmio in second place in Group Fending its participation in this initial stage with 11 points. O Montevideo City Torque reached the mark of 13assured the isolated leadership of the key and stamped the passport directly to the round of 16 of the competition.
The Grêmio squad now starts to focus exclusively on competing in the Brazilian Championship. Grêmio receives the Corinthians next Saturday (30), at 5:30 pm, again in Porto Alegre.
The Grêmio maintained greater control of ball possession during the initial stage, but demonstrated difficulties in tactical articulation and was unable to finish against the opponent’s goal. The home team’s best opportunity occurred when Tetê ran down the baseline, but Amuzu didn’t finish and Tiaguinho kicked the ball wide.
O Montevideo City Torque positioned efficiently in defense e explored counterattackswith a goal disallowed by Salomón Rodríguez for touching the arm before the center forward opened the scoring in the 9th minute, heading in a cross from Silvera, who had surpassed Marcos Rocha in the play.
In the second half, the Gaucho team came back with more intensity and tied in the first minutewhen Arthur found Gabriel Mec at speed. The attacker overcame the marking, invaded the area and finished low into the left corner of the goalkeeper. The confrontation remained balanced until the 38th minute, when Pizzichillo took a free kick with precision the entrance to the area, covering the barrier and surpassing goalkeeper Weverton to put the Uruguayans back in front.
The Grêmio reacted quickly and, in the 43rd minute, tied with Carlos Vinícius converting a penalty suffered by Braithwaite, displacing the goalkeeper on the kick, but the scorer himself ended up being sent off for a complaint in stoppage time, sealing the score.
