A GREVE
The general strike was called by the CGTP (General Confederation of Portuguese Workers) against the proposal to revise the labor law presented by the government of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro (PSD, right). The strike affects transport, airports, hospitals, schools and other public services.
The trade union central claims that the proposal reduces labor rights. Among the contested points are changes to fixed-term contracts, time banks and subcontracting rules. The general secretary of CGTP, Tiago Oliveira, states that the text increases exploitation mechanisms and should be withdrawn.
The Portuguese government argues that the reform gives more flexibility to the labor market. Montenegro minimized the impact of the strike on the eve of the strike and stated that it expected the majority of Portuguese people to work this Wednesday (June 3, 2026). The Minister of Labor, Rosário Palma Ramalho, said that the strike would bring “some inconveniences”but declared respect for the right to strike.
The UGT (General Union of Workers) stayed out of the strike. The center considers the mobilization “untimely”understanding that the proposal is still far from final voting. CGTP, on the other hand, states that this is the time to put pressure on the Portuguese government and Congress during the processing of the labor package.
