The five-hour rule for perfect flowers: If you plant roses in this place, you will destroy them

They don’t bloom much, they don’t grow properly, or you have to keep cutting them. Sometimes you almost wonder if you bought those roses just to be angry. Or if they didn’t cheat you in gardening. But according to the expert, the fault lies elsewhere. “The choice of site is very important,” Jiří Malaska says in the iReceptář podcast.

So hand on heart. How carefully have you thought about where to plant the roses? And what exactly are you buying? When planning, few people take into account the fact that a rose bush needs at least five to six hours of sunlight a day,” explains Jiří Malaska, director of the Botanical Garden and Rose Garden in Olomouc. It is the rose garden that was ranked among the five most beautiful rose gardens in the world. So he knows very well what roses need. And what will benefit them in your garden as well.

Where it will grow

But they shouldn’t even come into direct heat, although some tolerate it better than others. “For example, with dark-flowering roses, those that are distinctly red, heatstroke burns the petals,” warns the expert. So find a place where the sun will be just right.

For roses, you have to count on sufficiently permeable soil, they will not thrive in heavy, clay soil. And don’t be afraid to fertilize them with a special fertilizer in the spring, or add a little compost. This will also benefit them greatly.

And according to the expert, we often don’t think about one more thing. Or maybe we just can’t imagine it enough. After all, when buying a tiny bush or seedling, how carefully do you look at the height and width data to which it can grow?

“Often growers plant a relatively large and luxuriantly growing rose in a place where it has limited spatial possibilities,” points out Jiří Malaska. Logically, you then have to cut it all the more, and you are not immediately satisfied with it. “Therefore, definitely do not underestimate the choice of the variety itself,” adds an experienced expert.
