At the foot of this beach in the Algarve there is a rock that is the remains of the chimney of a volcano that is more than 70 million years old.

The Algarve coast combines popular beaches with geological elements that help tell the ancient history of the territory, visible in rock formations that stand out in the coastal landscape. Between these points is a natural structure that dates back to a volcanic past tens of millions of years old.

According to the online newspaper, next to Praia da Luz, in the municipality of Lagos, there is a rock formation known as Rocha Negra, which has become one of the most recognizable elements of that coastal area. The same source describes it as a visual landmark that stands out for its dark color and size.

It is an outcrop approximately 40 meters high, identified as what remains of the chimney of an ancient volcano, with an origin estimated at more than 70 million years. According to the same source, despite the volcano being extinct, the structure remains visible and continues to mark the landscape.

Praia da Luz, located a few kilometers from the center of Lagos, integrates this geological setting in a coastal environment that combines urbanized areas and natural cliffs. According to the tourist information portal Algarve Portugal Tourism, it is a location with strong tourist demand, especially by families, whilst maintaining an environment described as peaceful.

The same source says that the beach has different settings along its length, with a more open area and a more protected area next to the cliffs, where the landscape becomes more jagged.

Between cliffs, sand and small coves

It is important to highlight that Praia da Luz is characterized by its fine sand and generally calm and shallow waters, which contributes to conditions considered safe for swimmers, including children.

The same source adds that the east side of the beach tends to be quieter, while the west side includes small coves between the rocks, where areas of natural shelter form. In these spaces, the presence of rock formations creates small natural pools, although with irregular surfaces that require some attention.

Geological point integrated into the tourist landscape

Rocha Negra thus remains integrated into a bathing area that combines geological interest and regular tourist use. The formation, resulting from ancient volcanic processes, became part of Praia da Luz’s visual identity, being visible from various points along the coast.
