Brazil doubles in the 400m hurdles of the Diamond League with Piu and Matheus Lima

The Brazilians Alison dos Santos, Piu, and Matheus Lima won the gold and silver medalsrespectively, in the 400 m hurdles this Sunday in the Stockholm stage of the Diamond League. Piu scored 47.11 and remains undefeated in the race in 2026. Matheus Lima completed the course under 48 seconds for the first time and clocked 47.37. German Emil Agyekum came in third place, with 47.72.

“I really like this stadium (Stockholm Olympic) and this track. In three days it’s Oslo and this season I’m trying to reach the final of the Diamond League, as well as the World Ultimate, in September,” said Piu, adding that his focus this year is to work on speed.

It was the Brazilian’s third victory in the current Diamond League season. He scored the 300m hurdles in Shanghai and then won in Xiamen in the 400m hurdles. The two-time Olympic bronze medalist (Tokyo-2020 and Paris-2024) leads the world rankings in the 400 meter hurdles, with 46.72 seconds in the Xiamen stage.

Matheus Lima, 23 years old, had a best time of 48.08 and with the time in Sweden he reached third place in the ranking, tied with the North American Trevor Bassit and the Nigerian Ezekiel Nathaniel and behind only Alison dos Santos and the Norwegian Karsten Warholm, with 46.82. “May this mark be just another step towards even greater achievements. I am very proud of your evolution”, commented coach Sanderlei Parrela, runner-up in the world champion in Seville, in 1999, in the 400 m dash, about Matheus Lima’s mark.

The Brazilian duo returns to compete in the 400 m hurdles on Wednesday (10) in the Oslo stagein Norway, from the Diamond League.
