Keiko appears numerically ahead, but the difference to Roberto Sánchez is within the margin of error
The exit polls released this Sunday (June 7, 2026) indicate a technical tie in the 2nd round of Peru’s presidential elections. The right-wing candidate (Fuerza Popular) appears numerically ahead of the right-wing candidate. left (Together for Peru)but the difference is within the margin of error.
According to the Ipsos institute, Keiko has 50.7% of the valid votes, against 49.3% for Sánchez. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points. The survey interviewed 18,000 voters throughout Peru.
The Datum institute showed an even smaller difference: 50.53% for the Fuerza Popular candidate and 49.47% for the Juntos por el Perú representative.
FRAUD ALERT
Unlike the 1st round, held in April and marked by logistical delays in the opening of polling stations and the delivery of electoral materials in Lima, this Sunday’s election was classified as “relatively calm” by local authorities.
The president of the JNE (Jurado Nacional de Elecciones), Roberto Burneo, reported that all electoral material was available at polling places since early in the morning. Around 28,000 inspectors were mobilized to supervise the process.
Burneo urged political organizations, leaders and supporters to take action “with democratic responsibility” and respect the official results of the polls.
In the 1st round, defining Keiko’s opponent took more than 1 month due to the analysis of 15,000 contested ballots. At the time, the mayor of Lima, Rafael López Aliaga (Renovación Popular, right), declared that there had been fraud, but did not present evidence.
This Sunday, when voting in the Peruvian capital, Aliaga criticized the JNE and asked voters to avoid the victory of the left.
OPPOSING LEGACY
The election contrasts two striking political currents in Peru’s recent history. Keiko is running for President for the 4th time, after defeats in 2011, 2016 and 2021. The campaign defended the resumption of order and security and associated the candidate with the legacy of her father, former president Alberto Fujimori.
On the other side, Sánchez incorporated symbols associated with former president Pedro Castillo, a political ally who has been imprisoned since December 2022, after an unsuccessful attempt to dissolve Congress. The candidate said he would grant Castillo a pardon if elected.
