The situation in the occupied West Bank is escalating to unprecedented proportions. Violence by radical Israeli settlers against the Palestinian population has reached an all-time high, according to the latest figures from the United Nations.
Violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank has reached an all-time high this year, according to United Nations (UN) figures released on Thursday. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
- Israeli settler violence in the West Bank has reached an all-time high.
- More than a thousand attacks by settlers against Palestinians were recorded this year.
- On average, there are six incidents of settler violence per day.
Crossed the thousand mark and six attacks a day
The number of attacks this year has crossed the thousand mark, said the spokesman of the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, citing the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
“Just last week, settler attacks injured more than 30 Palestinians and caused widespread damage to property, central infrastructure, and livelihoods,” Dujarric pointed out.
“The current pace of settler attacks causing loss of life and damage to property, with an average of six incidents per day, is higher than in any previous year,” he said.
Illegal Jewish settlements
Israel has occupied the West Bank since the Six-Day War in 1967. Three million Palestinians and over half a million Israelis live there in Jewish settlements that were created during the occupation and are therefore illegal under international humanitarian law.
Violence has intensified here since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
Since the beginning of the year, approximately 2,200 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes by settler violence or access restrictions, while hundreds more have been forced to leave the area as a result of house demolitions ordered by Israeli authorities.
