Portuguese island on the ‘edge’ of Africa elected one of the “safest areas” in Portugal

Portuguese territory continues to reveal strong asymmetries when analyzing security data, with marked differences between mainland regions and islands. A recent study places Porto Santo, in Madeira, among the areas with the lowest number of recorded incidents, also highlighting the island of Terceira, in the Azores, as another of the territories with reduced indicators in this type of incidents.

Islands stand out in the lower levels

According to , which cites the Security Barometer from the company Verisure Portugal, Porto Santo is described as “one of the safest areas in Portugal”, maintaining “the lowest levels of occurrences” in all the territories analyzed. The same trend is observed on Terceira Island, which presents similar values ​​in the study.

According to the same source, the report is the result of data collected throughout 2025 through the company’s Alarm Receiving Center, which continuously monitors more than one million pieces of equipment across the country.

As explained by the same entity, the system operates permanently, 24 hours a day and throughout the year.

Lower population density associated with fewer occurrences

The analysis also indicates that territories with lower population density tend to record fewer incidents. Diário de Notícias says that districts, such as Guarda and Bragança, are also among those with the lowest values, a trend that also extends to island regions.

The same study adds that Lisbon, Porto, Setúbal and Faro concentrate around 66% of the incidents recorded in 2025.
