A motorcyclist succumbed to extensive injuries after a collision with a van on Thursday (June 18) in Spiš. At the same time, the police call on drivers to be more attentive during the motorcycle season. TASR was informed about this by Jana Illésová, spokeswoman of the Regional Directorate of the Police Force in Košice.

The accident occurred in the early evening on the section of the road from the village of Hnilčík to Novoveská Huta in the district of Spišská Nová Ves. According to the information so far, the motorcycle was driven by a 73-year-old foreigner. “In a right-hand turn, for reasons that have not yet been precisely determined, he crossed into the opposite part of the road, where he collided head-on with an oncoming Peugeot Boxer delivery vehicle.” explained the spokeswoman, saying that despite the efforts of paramedics, the man succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

According to the police, the van driver was not injured. Breath tests for both drivers were negative. The police will investigate the exact cause of the traffic accident and the degree of culpability of both participants.

In this context, the Košice police once again appeal to motorcyclists to always adapt their driving speed to their abilities, the condition of the road, the weather conditions and the nature of the road. “Especially when cornering, even a slight overestimation of one’s abilities can lead to tragic consequences. We also urge drivers of cars and trucks to pay extra attention to motorcyclists during the motorcycle season.” pointed out Illésová.
