Poland could spend from several to several tens of billions of zlotys to build a permanent base for the US armed forces on its territory. They could start building a small town for soldiers this year. State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Pawel Zalewski stated this in an interview with the TOK FM radio station on Thursday. This is reported by the Warsaw correspondent TASR according to the daily Rzeczpospolita.

  • Poland plans to build a permanent American base for billions of zlotys.
  • Construction of the facility and town for American soldiers is to begin this year.

  • The Pentagon has already received the official Polish proposal.

Poland wants to start construction this year

According to Zalewski, the Polish government wants to finish negotiations with the United States about the units that would operate at the base within a few weeks. At the same time, the cabinet plans to start building facilities and accommodation for American soldiers this year.

Zalewski emphasized that the permanent presence of US forces would strengthen strategic deterrence against Russia and signal a long-term US commitment to the defense of Poland. According to him, the United States would also protect its economic interests, as it plans to build a nuclear power plant and weapons capacities in the country.

The official offer is already in the Pentagon

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced at Tuesday’s government meeting that his cabinet will discuss a draft resolution on starting steps to establish a base and create the necessary logistical, financial, organizational and accommodation facilities. “We have to prepare for it so that after the implementation of this decision, American soldiers have a place to operate,” he said.

During his recent visit to Washington, Polish President Karol Nawrocki also brought up the topic of the permanent presence of American soldiers in talks with US President Donald Trump. In early June, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz submitted an official proposal for the establishment of a permanent base to the Pentagon, and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the openness of the US to the Polish proposal.
