A few dozen protesters rallied this morning in front of Parliament in Tirana, where a plenary session was taking place, with protesters calling for the repeal of a law allowing the construction of luxury hotels in protected areas – a law that could work in favor of a tourism development plan promoted by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

A month of protests

This plan to build luxury hotels in a protected area near Avlona has sparked strong reactions in the country and the anger of some Albanians, who have been protesting every day since May 30.

Protesters, who are also calling for the resignation of the Socialist government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, threw dozens of eggs at MPs’ cars and tried to break the police cordon separating them from the vehicles, an AFP reporter said.

Videos on social media show at least two men falling to the ground and officers being seen violently handcuffing them.

Albanian Ombudsman Edri Sabani said in a television interview that “an investigation has been launched into the behavior of the police”.

“The right to protest is a constitutional right and the police behaved disproportionately towards the protesters,” he added.

Late in the afternoon, dozens of protesters gathered in front of the Tirana police station to demand the release of those arrested. Shortly before 17:00 at least two people were released as the gathered crowd cheered.
