The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested, this Tuesday (30), Argentinean David Juan Manuel Corbalan, who was being investigated for attacking a Brazilian woman and causing an estimated loss of R$1 million. The arrest was carried out by agents from the 12th DP (Copacabana), at the metro station in the Flamengo neighborhood, in the south of the capital.
According to investigations, the suspect presented himself to the victim as an Arab heir that the goods would be blocked abroad. With this version, he would have won the woman’s trust between the years 2023 and 2024.
In addition to the financial loss, the police found that Corbalan took advantage of the period in which he the victim was hospitalized for heart surgery to enter her apartment and steal electronics, jewelry and documents.
Investigations also indicate that the Argentine used bank accounts in the name of other ex-girlfriends to handle the amounts received. According to the Civil Police, he has a history of similar crimes since 2015 in different Brazilian states.
Given the elements gathered in the investigation, the police authority represented preventive detention of the investigatedwhich was authorized by the Court. The decision took into account, among other factors, the risk of flight, after signs emerged that the suspect was getting rid of belongings and preparing to leave the state.
After intelligence and monitoring work, agents from the 12th DP located Corbalan in Flamengo and served the arrest warrant for the crimes of embezzlement and qualified theft.
In testimony, according to the police, the person being investigated stated that intended to flee to São Paulo and declared that he had already been arrested in Argentina by the same type of scam. THE CNN Brazil tries to locate the defense of the aforementioned suspect.
The case remains under investigation.
