A Sony Interactive Entertainment this Wednesday (1st.Jul.2026) which will end, in January 2028, the production of physical discs for all new games released for consoles PlayStation. New titles produced from this date onwards will only be available in digital format at the PlayStation Store —the company’s official virtual store— and in physical stores.
Games released until January 2028 will continue to operate normally in the traditional format. It was not clear, however, whether additional copies of old games (such as The Last of Us Part II or Spider-Man 2) if they run out after this date.
According to Sony, the change is motivated by the general preference for digital media, which significantly exceeds that of physical discs. “This transition will allow us to be more aligned with how the majority of our community prefers to access and play games today”, informed the company in a note.
The company stated that it will continue to prioritize resources to drive innovation in the way users access content and offer options about where they prefer to purchase new games. “We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and appreciate your continued support”added Sony.
