The CSIC opens to the public its catalog of those retaliated by Franco’s regime: some were purged for wearing pants

They had a career ahead of them, and many saw it cut short due to their political affiliations, their professional activity or simply because they were women and wore pants. There are at least 511 people linked to the Board of Expansion of Studies (JAE) who were purged by the Franco authorities starting in 1939. For the first time in its 87 years of history, the Higher Council of Scientific Research (), the largest public research organization in Spain, created by the dictator Francisco Franco on the ashes of the JAE, publishes an archive with all the existing information on these purges and their victims. Those responsible for the investigation now hope that their families can collaborate to complete their life history, since for many it is not even known what their faces were, because there are no photos; just the cold references of the files.
