Two people die at a World Cup party in Mexico – 07/01/2026 – Sport

At least two people died in the early hours of Wednesday (1st) during mass celebrations in Mexico City to qualify for the round of 16 of the World Cup, the local government reported.

The capital’s Health Department said that a 19-year-old girl and a 44-year-old man died of asphyxiation. The local press mentions a third victim who has not yet been confirmed by the authorities.

This Tuesday (30), Mexico won its first direct elimination World Cup match in 40 years at the Azteca stadium, with a 2-0 victory against Ecuador.

The result guaranteed the Mexican team a place in the round of 16.

More than a million people gathered to celebrate in the streets of Mexico City, according to city hall estimates.
