Metro station in Thessaloniki, Greece
The project is more than 100 years old, the first tunnel was already in the last century, but History delayed this story. Welcome to Greece.
Os delays on the lines of metro are a frequent topic in Portugal: there are no complaints about the long delays on the Rosa line, between São Bento and Casa da Música; The metro still doesn’t reach Loures or Odivelas.
In the case of Porto, works began in 2021; would, then in 2024, now it is expected to be in 2025. A delay of 2 years, therefore. At the very least.
In Loures, there is not even a construction plan, there are no works in that direction. Therefore, there are no dates. This has only been talked about since at least 1993.
2 year delay, we’ve been talking about it for 31 years.
Even so, they still lag behind what happened in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece.
The metro project was designed more than 100 years ago. The first tunnel was dug 38 yearsem 1986.
Now, in 2024… it has opened. Last Saturday.
They are practically 10 km of driverless vehicleswith 13 stations.
The channel reports that, throughout the first four days of travel, no one pays. From there, each ticket costs just 0.60 euros.
The question is: why did it take so long? Why there is a lot of history in Greece.
During the construction of the metro, many relics, including a antique treasure of Thessalonica. These antiquities led to a dispute, construction almost stopped, but in 2015 the Central Archaeological Council agreed to remove the antiquities and place them in a station.
The works, with tunnels on ancient commercial routes through the city center, showed: a Roman-era road, ancient Greek cemeteries, water and drainage systems, mosaics, inscriptions and tens of thousands of artifacts from different centuries.
In total, more than 300,000 archaeological finds – many are now displayed in stations.
But, 38 years later, it is ready. It cost 3 billion euros.
