"When your neighbor's beards ...": German ultra -right triples their votes in the most populous state

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Central-Rececha has become the most voted party in the local elections of North-Westphalia, the most populous state in Germany, according to the first projections of the public chain WDR, which place the Chancellor’s party, as the winner of the elections with more than one third of the votes cast.

The CDU would thus lead the electoral results with 33.7 percent of the votes, followed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD), with 22.1%, and, thirdly with about 15% of the votes. But in this last data is the most shocking key to this appointment with the polls: the ultras advance, tripling approximately their support in the western state compared to five years ago.

Likewise, the greens have suffered strong losses, falling almost seven percentage points to 13.1%, while the Free Democratic Party (FDP) has lost two, staying in 3.5% of the votes. On the other hand, (the left) has improved a point and a half its results, obtaining 5.5%.

According to the WDR, participation has been 58.5%, significantly higher than that of the local elections of 2020 (51.9%).

Celebration with red alert

The parliamentary leader of the CDU, Jens Spahn, has affirmed that the results reinforce both the Regional Party and the Federal Coalition of Merz. “The good result in North-Westphalia Rhine is the reward for good work on the ground. But it also represents an impulse for the coalition in Berlin,” Spahn told the German news agency DPA.

Likewise, the state prime minister, Hendrik Wüst, also of the CDU, has expressed concern about the AFD’s rise, since the extreme right -wing party has tripled approximately its percentage of votes compared to five years ago.

“This result must make us reflect and it does not allow us to sleep quietly, not even my party, which has won these elections so clearly,” Wüst said to the public chain ARD, warning that the pronounced progress of the AFD is a problem for the federal coalition of Merz.

For their part, the co -chants of the SPD, Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil, have expressed their disappointment for the result of Sunday’s local elections in the most populous state in the country. “It is true that we have not been able to stop the downward trend,” Bas told WDR.

“Of course, the results do not make me happy,” he said after the first projections, which placed the SPD around 22% of the votes throughout the federated state

On the contrary, the Co -leader of the AFD, has described the result of his party as a success, highlighting that “the first forecasts suggest that the AFD has tripled its votes.”

“This is a great success for us. Congratulations to all our elected representatives, both current and new. We are a popular party and we all have a great responsibility for Germany,” he held through the social network X.
