Increasingly renovated decide to leave the country where they were born to take advantage of the renovation in a place where money comes further. Patti Addington, a reformed teacher in the United States, is one such example. At 68, he moved to Torremolinos and says he was never so happy with his pension.
According to News Work, the decision to move to Spain came after a remarkable experience in 2018, when Patti traveled the way to Santiago. The trip made her so delighted with the country and her culture that she began to seriously think about returning.
“I came back from Spain unwilling to leave and started thinking about how, where and when I could change myself,” he said. “My children were already adults. I was renovated. The place where I lived was no longer happy and the political climate in the United States was saddened.
A house overlooking the Mediterranean
In 2021, Patti settled in Torremolinos, in a house with a balcony facing the Mediterranean. According to herself, “the sights of my balcony are the best I’ve ever seen. I have a view of the sea!” The new daily life brought him a sense of renewal. “Every day I look out the window or sit on the porch and I am transported to a world of blue sea, seagulls in the air, palm trees, boats, sea tours and lush vegetation.”
The adaptation was facilitated by the proximity of services. “I just have to walk a little to dive into one of the two Olympic pools or go to the gym to exercise,” he added, underlining how small routines contribute to daily well-being.
Costs that make a difference
The most evident difference, as Patti says, came up in the monthly accounts. “In general, it is more viable to live here and enjoy this phase of my life. Food is cheaper. The clothing is cheaper. Entertainment is cheaper. Even the flowers for the house are cheaper. A bottle of decent wine does not arrange the budget,” he explained.
In the United States, where he lived in Indian River, he paid $ 1500 in income, as well as about 150 electricity, 50 water and another 150 phone, television and internet. Already in Torremolinos, he describes, “paid 860 euros for a two-sea-view apartment. Electricity is a third of what I paid in the United States and water costs me half. Television, phone and internet are at 74 euros per month. Gas is only 18 euros. Even health insurance comes out almost a thousand dollars cheaper.”
More quality of life
With this clearance, travel every month. He has visited cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Jerez, and continues to explore the region’s villages and beaches.
It also takes the opportunity to have Spanish classes, welcome friends from America and collaborate in volunteer programs. Among the small pleasures that can now be allowed are massage and spa treatments, which can do for less than 100 euros.
What’s most counts
According to, more than the numbers, what delights it is the way it was received. It speaks of the sympathy of people, the family environment that observes on the streets and the sense of security.
Every day goes out to walk and discover new places. It is this simple but happy routine that makes you tell that the move to Spain was the best decision of your life.
