The capital of , , was chosen to host the 2031, announced this Friday (10) the Pan American Sports Organization (Panam Sports). The city won the joint candidacy of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói by 28 votes to 24, in a decision taken during the entity’s extraordinary assembly, held in Santiago, Chile.
In total, 40 national Olympic committees participated in the vote. Of these, 12 were entitled to an extra vote as they had already hosted previous editions of the Games. Each candidate had 40 minutes to present their project to the Panam Sports Executive Committee. Assunção had already tried to host the 2027 event, but was defeated by Lima, in Peru. This time, the Paraguayan capital presented a proposal budgeted at around US$390 million (approximately R$2.1 billion), while the Brazilian project predicted an investment of US$667 million (R$3.65 billion).
“We want to break the paradigm and show that small countries can organize large-scale events with excellence, planning and vision”, stated Camilo Pérez López, president of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, during the presentation of the candidacy.
The Pan American Games bring together athletes from across the American continent every four years. The last edition was held in Santiago, in 2023, with the participation of 6,900 athletes in 40 sports and 59 disciplines. The United States has topped the medal table in 17 of the 19 editions held to date.
