A part of the Torre dei Conti, a medieval structure located in the historic center of Rome, collapsed on the morning of Monday, November 3, causing a scene of panic near the Roman Forum, close to the Colosseum. According to the Italian press, one person was seriously injured and another remains buried under the rubble.
Around 29 meters high, the tower, built in the 13th century, was undergoing restoration work when the partial collapse occurred. During the rescue operations, a second collapse occurred, increasing the risk for workers and emergency teams.
According to testimonies collected by Corriere della Sera, four workers were rescued alive, while a fifth remains under the wreckage. Rescue teams maintain contact with the worker through a small opening, trying to get him out safely.
The most seriously injured is a 64-year-old man, hospitalized in critical condition with a head injury. Videos are circulating on social media showing the moment when part of the tower collapses, raising a huge cloud of dust and debris.
The area was isolated as a precaution due to the risk of further collapses. The Rome prosecutor’s office has already opened an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, while the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, and the mayor of the capital, Roberto Gualtieri, were at the scene. Francesco Rocca, president of the Lazio region, expressed solidarity with the affected workers, especially the seriously injured one.
