Ministry of Communications will evaluate court decision that declared Oi bankrupt

The Ministry of Communications said it will evaluate the court decision that declared Oi bankrupt and its impacts. “The ministry clarifies that it is committed to ensuring the continuity of telecommunications services, even if they are taken over by another company,” he said in a statement.

The ministry also highlighted that it has been “closely” monitoring the entire progress of the judicial recovery process taking place in the Rio de Janeiro Courts and the fulfillment of the obligations assumed by the company.

Oi’s bankruptcy was declared this Monday, 10th, by judge Simone Gastesi Chevrand, from the 7th Business Court of Rio, after it was found that the company no longer had enough money to maintain its operations, nor the conditions to revive its cash flow. The decision to bankrupt Oi was taken after the company and its intervenor highlighted the insolvency situation on Friday, 7th.

The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) also commented on the case and highlighted that the public utility services provided by Oi will be maintained despite the bankruptcy decree.

“According to the court decision, the continuity of the services provided by the company is assured, in a process of transition and orderly liquidation,” said Anatel, in a note.

Among the most important services, the regulatory agency highlighted the maintenance of public telephones in around 7,500 locations, the three-digit service for public bodies and emergencies, and interconnections; in addition to other contracts signed with federal, state and municipal public entities, and private sector clients.

The decision also established, among other measures, the possibility of selling Oi’s operation to other interested parties who can ensure the continuity of all current contracts and services definitively.
