US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he wants for the US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the links between a poor financier and a convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Democratic ex-president Bill Clinton. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
According to AFP, apparently in an effort to deflect attention after the latest release of Epstein’s emails raised questions again about his own ties to the financier, Trump also called for an investigation into the US bank JPMorgan Chase, former president of Harvard University Larry Summers and others.
Trump on Friday accused his opponents from the Democratic camp that they are deliberately using the “Epstein hoax” to distract from the party’s recent compromise to end the record government shutdown. At the same time, he declared that they were involved in the scandal with Epstein “Democrats, not Republicans”.
With Friday’s announcement, Trump broke the news two days of silence on the scandal after emails from Epstein’s estate released on Wednesday renewed questions about the 79-year-old US president’s long and close relationship with the late financier. He was allegedly the head of a network in which he provided wealthy people with underage girls for the purpose of sexual abuse and exploitation.
Clinton himself has been the target of speculation for a long time due to his ties to Epstein, as he also flew on his private plane. However, he was not charged in connection with the scandal.
According to several emails, Epstein stated that Clinton has never been to his private island in the Caribbean where the alleged abuse took place. Clinton, Summers, or the other officials mentioned by Trump have not yet commented immediately.
Epstein, according to official statements, which many question, however, he committed suicide in prison in 2019, before his trial began.
