Senators tell Lula that Bolsonaro’s lesser sentence will pass – 12/11/2025 – Power

Senators warned the president (PT) that he should approve next Wednesday (17) a project that reduces the sentences of those convicted of participating in coup acts, including the former president (PL).

It was approved, in the early hours of last Wednesday (10), which replaced the broad amnesty for the former president and others arrested for participating in the attacks on the headquarters of Power on January 8, 2023.

On Wednesday night, during a meeting with the president in Granja do Torto, the leader of the MDB in the Senate, Eduardo Braga (AM), the president of the CAE (Economic Affairs Commission), Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), and the leader of the government in the House, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), took the bill’s approval for granted.

The conclusion is the result of a probable agreement between the presidents of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), and the president of the Senate, (-AP), with the approval of ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court).

The assessment was that a request for a review (more time to study the material) would be ineffective as only one hour could be granted to evaluate the text. According to reports, Lula reaffirmed that he was against reducing sentences, but did not say whether he would veto the project. The president was also informed that the presidential act must be overturned by the House.

The president’s collaborators claim that the tendency is for the project to be vetoed by him. These allies remember that Lula had already expressed his opposition to the proposal in September, amid pressure led by governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP) for amnesty.

This Thursday (11), at an event in Minas Gerais, Lula declared that he will make a decision on the project that reduces sentences for those accused of attempted coups when the text arrives for his sanction, but that (PL) needs to pay for the crime.

“The discussion now goes to , let’s see what will happen. When it arrives at my table, I will make the decision. Me and God, sitting at my table, I will make the decision. I will do what I understand needs to be done, because he has to pay for the attempted coup, for the attempt to destroy democracy.”

The senators also informed Lula about the procedure designed for the debate on the impeachment process of STF ministers. The assessment was that tempers calmed down after , which, following a request from the AGU, reviewed the decision that would restrict the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) from having the right to request removal of members of the court.

In the conversation, which lasted around three hours, Lula informed that he would call Alcolumbre, probably this week. The president repeated what he has said about the president of the Senate and his predecessor, senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).

Lula said he likes both, but that he does not give up the prerogative of nominating the STF minister. The president recalls having sought out Alcolumbre and Pacheco to inform them about his option for AGU chief minister, Jorge Messias. He claimed to have understood that this was the gesture required by Alcolumbre to pave the way for the approval of his nominee’s name.

The intention is for Messiah to be questioned in February of next year.
