The government’s proposal to allow aerial spraying by drones in agricultural activities was strongly criticized by the (Landless Rural Workers Movement) this Wednesday (11).
In a statement, the MST speaks of a “serious setback” and targets governor Elmano de Freitas, from the PT, by pointing out that “this stance is contradictory for someone who has always followed popular struggles in the fight against the use of pesticides.”
“We demand that the government of Ceará reconsider this proposal”, says an excerpt. “This practice must be combated and not regulated, as its consequences are harmful not only to family farming, but to the population in general”, continues the MST.
The episode adds to the relationship between the movement and PT members. Since the beginning of the Lula government, the MST has speeded up agrarian reform processes.
Movement leaders called for a change in command of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, currently in the hands of PT member Paulo Teixeira.
At the beginning of the month, members of the movement launched the Christmas with Earth campaign, which is expected to continue. On the 3rd, MST families began invasions in Rio Grande do Sul and Pará.
