Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán held a phone call where they discussed a possible pause or truce in the conflict in Ukraine for Christmas. “This morning I had a one-hour telephone conversation with President Putin”Orban said on social media.
The conversation, which lasted an hour, focused on “joint search” of different policies to solve the war and was initiated by Budapest. “Vadimir Putin had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, at the initiative of the Hungarian side,” the Kremlin explained.
“These are the most dangerous weeks of the war between Russia and Ukraine. We are taking all possible diplomatic measures to advocate for a ceasefire and peace talks,” the Hungarian leader continued to explain.
Just one day later after the call, the Russian Government shared with the Hungarian Embassy a list of prisoners for a possible exchange with Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmiri Peskov He also confirmed both ideas suggested by Orbán.
Zelensky, for his part, criticized Orbán for having a conversation with Putin again and accused the Russian of destroying European “unity” for their own personal interests. “We hope that at least he does not call Bashar al Assad in Moscow to listen to his sermons for an hour too,” the Ukrainian president commented jokingly.
