Volodymyr Zelenskyy expects compliance with the agreement on stopping Russia’s attacks on Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expects Russia to abide by the agreement not to attack Kiev during winter frosts, an initiative brokered by Donald Trump. Millions of Ukrainians remain without electricity and the winter may worsen the situation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Thursday that he expects Russia to fulfill an agreement not to attack Kiev and other cities in his country for one week due to winter weather, as announced by US President Donald Trump. It was reported by the Reuters agency, writes TASR.

Zelensky wrote on the social network that the next few days will show whether Moscow will keep such a promise. “Our teams have discussed this in the United Arab Emirates. We expect these agreements to be implemented,” he said. “De-escalation steps contribute to real progress towards ending the war,” he stressed in the post.

Thanks to USA for the initiative

Shortly after that, Zelenskyy also published his regular evening video speech, in which he thanked Washington for this initiative. “We thank the American side for its efforts to stop attacks on energy (targets) at this time and hopefully America will succeed in this,” he added.

Trump had previously announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to his request to halt attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kiev for a period of one week.

Millions without electricity

Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in recent days have already left millions of Ukrainians without light, heat and water. The situation is particularly critical in Kyiv. In some parts of the country, according to forecasts, the temperature could drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

“They haven’t experienced a winter like this before. I personally asked President Putin not to fire on Kiev and various other cities for a week. He agreed and I have to say that was very nice,” Trump said at a meeting of his cabinet.

Russia has not yet confirmed Trump’s claims.
