In the middle of February, it is really dry in Europe. In lower elevations, this weather causes floods, and some areas will also be affected by snow drifts. Over 200 centimeters of snow may fall in places by the end of the week! The portal informs which areas it will be.
Dry and cloudy weather continues in our territory until the weekend (February 14 and 15). Showers or light rain should persist at lower elevations and snow will continue at higher elevations. This can cause problems especially on mountain passes.
Another wave of extremes is expected in Europe during the week, which it can bring heavy rain and, in some areas, extremely heavy snowfall. This episode of severe weather is coming under the influence of a large area of low air pressure. On Tuesday, February 10, the center of low pressure moved over the British Isles, where it should remain until the weekend.
In this area of low air pressure, other smaller depressions are gradually forming, which will move into the interior of Europe. They will bring with them more pronounced and more frequent precipitation. The most rain will fall in Western Europe, where more than 100 millimeters of rain may fall by the weekend. This may cause local flooding, especially in the Iberian Peninsula, which has already been hit by intense bad weather in recent days.
Snow can be expected in higher areas. The most serious situation may arise in the Alps, where the most snow could fall since the beginning of this winter. During the week, the front will bring large amounts of snow to the Alpine region. By the weekend, the French and Swiss Alps will be affected, during the weekend more significant snowfall will also move to the German, Austrian and Italian Alps.
The ICON numerical model, which is among the most accurate for the Western Alps region, predicts that by noon on Saturday (February 14) 100 to 200 centimeters of snow can fall. More than 200 centimeters of snow could fall in the Grenoble area. During the weekend, the weather will be even more pronounced, as cold air will begin to flow across Europe. This will bring a noticeable cooling and in some areas it may start to snow even in lower positions, where it is not common.
