Seven people remain missing after boat sinking in Manaus

After the sinking of a boat at the meeting of the Negro and Solimões rivers, in Manauslast Friday (13), the searches for seven people were still missing this Sunday morning (15). The episode resulted in the deaths of two people, including a three-year-old child and an as-yet-unidentified woman.

Late Saturday afternoon (14), teams from the Amazonas Fire Department located, at a depth of approximately 50 meters, the area where the vessel is located. The search for the missing was suspended early in the evening for security reasons and will resume this morning at 6am.

The operation mobilizes 44 military firefighters, including 21 divers, in addition to five vessels. A specialized team sent from Itacoatiara it also carries out sweeps along the Amazon River to try to locate victims.

Since the accident, the Civil Defense of Amazonas activated emergency protocols and works in an integrated manner with other state forces in search, rescue and assistance to victims. The agency mobilized 20 agents, with experience in diving, and two boats to reinforce the operation.

O Government of Amazonas reported that it set up a task force on Friday, when 71 passengers were rescued alive.

So far, two deaths have been confirmed: a three-year-old child and a woman. The bodies were released by Legal Medical Institute on the same day.

A State Secretariat for Social Assistance and Fight Against Hunger provides psychosocial care for victims’ families at the Fire Department headquarters, in the south of the capital. Support began on Friday, during the disembarkation of survivors.

Passengers traveled on the Lima de Abreu XV speedboat, which left Manaus heading to the municipality of Nova Olinda do Nortewhen it sank near the capital.

To date, 71 people have been rescued and seven are still missing. The two dead were identified as a girl of approximately three years old, and a woman of an unknown age.

The child was rescued by rescue teams and taken to the East Zone Children’s Hospital and Emergency Room, but was admitted to the unit already dead. The two bodies remain at the IML (Legal Medical Institute), where they undergo the identification process and are then released.

The Civil Police of Amazonas reported that the pilot of the vessel was arrested in the act for manslaughter, and will be released after paying bail. The case will remain under investigation by the Specialized Homicide and Kidnapping Police Station.
