Hungary is the only EU country represented at the highest level in the Peace Council, Orbán underlined in his speech.
Peace efforts in Gaza and Europe
“I represent a country that has been living in the neighborhood of a brutal war for four years. We all know that this war would not have broken out if President Trump had been in office at that time. With his return to office, we have a great opportunity to redouble our peace efforts, not only in Gaza, but also in Ukraine,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister.
According to Orbán, Europeans are aware that the security situation in the Middle East, especially in Gaza, has a significant impact on the security of Europe, and therefore Hungary’s participation in the Peace Council is not only based on principles, but also results from its own security interests.
New initiatives for peace
“Serious discussions continue in Europe about this Council and its future role. We understand that in recent decades, international organizations have failed to fulfill their role in maintaining peace and stability in the world, and therefore new initiatives are needed to promote peace around the world. We are convinced that President Trump’s initiative to establish the Council is one such step in the right direction. We are proud to be among the founding members and to be part of such excellent cooperation,” Orbán said in Washington at the founding session.
A peace council with global ambitions
The head of the White House established the Peace Council on January 22 at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Although it was originally supposed to oversee the post-war reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, its charter does not limit the organization’s activities to the Palestinian territory, according to available information. Trump claims that the Peace Council could fulfill some functions of the United Nations (UN) in the future.
