The bad weather on the coast of São Paulo led to the closure of two highways in the region this Sunday (22). According to the State Civil Defense, the Mogi/Bertioga Highway (SP-098), which connects the metropolitan region of São Paulo to the North Coast of the State, was closed due to heavy rains on the coast.

The recommendation is that drivers adopt alternative routes, such as the Rio/Santos highway (SP-055), Anchieta (SP-150) and Tamoios (SP-099).

The fall of a barrier also closed the Oswaldo Cruz highway (SP-125), which connects Taubaté to Ubatuba. The landslide occurred at KM 81, heading down the mountain towards the coastal city.

The guidance in this case is also that the drivers take alternative routes.

“A conservation team has been called and is moving from São Luiz do Paraitinga to remove the obstacle”, says the Civil Defense note.

This weekend, Ubatuba was hit by intense rain, which flooded the city’s streets. According to Civil Defense, in just 12 hours the city recorded 126 millimeters of rain, which was predicted for the entire month of February.

One of the flooded neighborhoods was Sertão da Quina, which is between Maranduba beach and Serra. According to reports from residents, the water reached the roofs of the houses.

“The houses were covered up to the ceiling. The Fire Department is rescuing some families that are still on the roof”, reported Conceição de Oliveira, a resident of Sertão da Quina. “The electricity didn’t go out and the water was touching the wires, so there was a huge danger.”
