Corinthians played better in the second half

Corinthians put an end to Portuguesa’s good campaign in the Campeonato Paulista. The team qualified for the semi-finals after drawing 1-1 in the quarter-finals, this Sunday, at the Estádio do Canindé, in São Paulo. In penalties, the black and white team went 8-7, after 18 charges. Hugo Souza saved two shots and secured classification.

A Portuguese was better in both halveswith clearer chances and holding Corinthians. In the first stage, Hugo Souza went from villain to hero by committing and defending a penalty. However, it was impossible to stop Zé Vitor’s shot, which made the best team come out ahead. Vitinho, however, relieved the Corinthians and equalized, in the 47th minute of the second half.

The base date for the semi-finals is Sunday, March 1st. Corinthians’ opponent will be Novorizontinowith a single game in Novo Horizonte. Previously, the Corinthians now turn to the Brasileirão, for which they visit Cruzeiro, in the fourth round, in the middle of the week.

The game was preceded by a show in the stands. Fans of Corinthians and Portuguesa, dividing Canindé half and half, took part in a rare scene, as the match is not included among the classics with a single fan restriction in the State.

With the ball rolling, beauty was put on the back burner. The game was more pragmatic in the first half. Both teams sought to attack, but Portuguesa had the clearest chances, even requiring saves from Hugo Souza.

Portuguesa’s greater volume of play was rewarded in the 23rd minute. Renê invaded the area and was brought down by Hugo Souza. Raphael Claus scored a penalty. Renê himself took the charge, but hit it weakly and made it easier for the goalkeeper to defend and redeem himself for having committed the foul.

Portuguese remained intense. Corinthians had difficulty leaving. When he escaped, Matheuzinho went up the right and went up in search of Memphis Depay. The Dutchman stretched, but just swept the ball to finish.

The Portuguese’s superiority finally came to fruition at the end of the first half. Matheus Bidu pushed away badly with a kick, André Ramalho failed in his second attempt to send it away. Renê recovered and left it to Zé Vitor, with a blow, to open the scoring.

Corinthians played better in the second half, with the arrival of wingers Vitinho and Dieguinhoas well as Garro in the middle. The team maintained more possession of the ball and managed to occupy the offensive field. However, there was still a need to break through the Portuguese defense.

In the 28th minute, Pedro Raul, who came on for Memphis, had everything to equalize. The attacker received a cross from Matheus Bidu in the small area, got tangled up and shot out.

The tone continued with Corinthians attacking, pushed by the fans. The team, however, abused passing errors and was unable to convert the volume into clear chances.

With Corinthians launching an attack, spaces opened up in defense. The Portuguese started to take advantage, exploring the gaps, and had a chance to expand, but stopped at Hugo Souza.

Without so many merits, Corinthians were finally able to ease the tension in the 47th minute of the second half. Vitinho received a throw, took it off the mark and hit a cross to equalize.

On penalties, Bruno Bertinato saved Garro’s charge. Vitinho, Matheuzinho, Gustavo Henrique, Pedro Raul, André Ramalho, Kayke, André and Allan scored for Corinthians.

Zé Vitor, Eric Botteghin, Gustavo Henrique, Maceió, Hudson, Gustavo Salomão and Carlos Lima did it for Portuguesa. Hugo Souza again saved Renê’s charge and took the decisive penalty, taken by Cauari.
