The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said it was making a “broad assessment” of the impact of the decision and called on Washington to suspend the tariffs.

China asked the United States government this Monday (23) the cancellation of unilateral tariffs announced by President Donald Trumpafter the Supreme Court declared most of the fees illegal.

On Friday, the court ruled that Trump does not have the authority to impose tariffs based on a 1977 lawon which he relied to apply the taxes, which shook world trade.

The decision provoked fury from Trump, who initially announced a 10% flat ratebefore raising it on Saturday to 15%.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that it is making a “broad assessment” of the impact of the decision and called on Washington to suspend tariffs.

“China asks the United States to cancel their unilateral tariffs against their trading partners”, stated the ministry. “There are no winners in a trade war and protectionism gets you nowhere”.

The new tariffs 15% comes into effect on Tuesday (24) and will remain valid for at least 150 dayswith exceptions for some products.

The Supreme Court’s decision was considered a major political setback for Trumpby canceling its main economic measure.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated on Sunday that agreements with China, the European Union and other partners will remain in forcedespite the court decision.
