O Red Bull Bragantino manifested in relation to defender Gustavo Marques’ sexist speeches after the 2-1 defeat to São Paulo, in a game held this Saturday for the Paulistão quarter-finals.
, like “I don’t think she has the ability to referee a game like that”. When contacted by the Estadão report, Red Bull Bragantino spoke out in defense of referee Daiane Caroline Muniz dos Santos, attacked by Gustavo Marques.
The Bragança club still made a point of repudiating the attitudes of its athlete and reinforced the apology made by the player. In the mixed zone after the match, the player admitted he was wrong and said he had apologized to the referee.
To Estadão, the Red Bull Bragantino confirmed that Daiane Muniz accepted the apology, “but he asked Gustavo to review what he said and be more careful, which even with a hot head doesn’t justify it. He really recognized that he made a mistake and apologized again.”
After what happened, the Bragança team released an official notel. “Red Bull Bragantino publicly reinforces its apology to all women and, mainly, to referee Daiane Muniz. The club does not condone and repudiates defender Gustavo Marques’ sexist speech, said after the match.
Still at the stadium, the player and the club’s sporting director, Diego Cerri, went to the referee’s dressing room to personally apologize on behalf of the institution and acknowledge the error. Both also met the press at the scene.
We know that the weight of an elimination is frustrating, but nothing justifies what was said. Whether in football or in any part of society.
São Paulo Federation takes action
Also sought after by the Estadão report, the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF) expressed himself saying that he will forward the case to the Sports Justice Court (TJD), entity responsible for evaluating which punishments can be applied to Gustavo Marques.
Still according to the FPFit is uncertain to establish a deadline for sanctions to be applied to the Red Bull Bragantino player. The report found that it will still be assessed whether the TJD will accept the complaint, and so on.
It is worth noting that Gustavo Marques did not suffer any type of punishment from judge Daiane Muniz, as the game had already been ended when the player addressed her in a sexist manner. However, at the final whistle, the referee sent off full-back Juninho Capixaba for ironic gestures. Bragantino players complained bitterly about a penalty that was not awarded in the final minutes of the duel.
The FPF issued an official statement regarding sexist speeches by Gustavo Marques:
“It is with deep indignation and revolt that the São Paulo Football Federation received the interview with athlete Gustavo Marques, from Red Bull Bragantino, after the match against São Paulo, this Saturday (21), at Paulistão Casas Bahia.
A statement regarding referee Daiane Muniz that reflects a primitive, sexist, prejudiced and misogynistic vision, incompatible with the values that govern society and football. It is absolutely appalling that an athlete, under any circumstances, would question the ability of a referee based on their gender.
The FPF is proud to have 36 referees and assistants on its staff and continues to work actively to make this number grow.
Daiane Muniz is a FPF/CBF/FIFA referee of the highest technical, correct and character quality. The FPF reinforces all its support for Daiane and all women who work or wish to work in any area of football. Our daily work is to ensure that football is a safe and fair environment for all women.
Finally, the FPF will forward such statements to the Sports Court, so that it can take all appropriate measures.”
