If you haven't yet validated IRS invoices, follow this tip before the deadline runs out: it's a faster way to do it and can increase your refund

The deadline for validating tax invoices for 2025 for IRS purposes ends on March 2nd and anyone who hasn’t done so yet risks losing tax deductions. With just a few days to go before the end of the validation period, there is a simple way to speed up the process and avoid forgetting: use the e-Fatura application on your cell phone.

According to Notícias ao Minuto, taxpayers have until March 2 to classify pending invoices on the Finance Portal. This year, the deadline was extended to that date because February 28th coincides with a Saturday, thus moving to the first following business day, as determined by tax rules.

In an email sent to taxpayers, Revenue and Customs reminds that the deadline for validating tax invoices for 2025 is underway and emphasizes that it is essential to associate pending expenses with the correct sectors to benefit from deductions in the Income Tax declaration.

The app can save time

As the website explains, validation can be done both on the Finance Portal and through the e-Fatura application, available for Android and iOS. The app allows you to classify pending invoices more quickly, including the possibility of validating several at once when they belong to the same issuer or appear grouped on the same page.

This functionality may prove useful for those who have accumulated dozens of unvalidated invoices throughout the year. The process becomes more intuitive and reduces the risk of leaving documents unclassified.

The tax administration also reminds that each family member must validate their own invoices, including spouse and dependents. Omission may impact the final tax calculation.

What expenses can be classified?

The system allows you to associate invoices with various categories, including health, education, property charges, homes, vehicle maintenance and repairs, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms, veterinary activities, newspapers and magazines, and public transport.

If an invoice is placed in the “other” field, it is automatically associated with general family expenses, counting towards the maximum deductible limit of 250 euros per family.

According to the publication, it is also at this stage that the existence of medical prescriptions for health expenses with a VAT rate of 23 percent must be indicated, ensuring that they are correctly considered for deduction purposes.

Attention to self-employed workers and separated parents

Self-employed workers, or those who accumulate income as employees through green receipt activity, must also, by March 2, indicate which invoices relate to professional activity and which correspond to personal expenses.

According to the IRS Code, it is also within this period that separated or divorced parents must communicate the existence of their children’s alternate residence, when provided for in the parental responsibilities agreement. They must also indicate the percentage of expense sharing.

If this information is not communicated, or if the sum of the percentages declared by both parents does not correspond to 100 percent, the value of the tax deductions will be divided into equal parts.

Working students and household composition

Students who are part of the household and have earned income from work up to 2,612.50 euros per year in 2025 must submit, also by March 2, proof of attendance at the educational establishment. Otherwise, they may be taxed independently.

It is also possible, within the same period, to update relevant elements of the household on the Finance Portal, as explained by . This information will later be reflected in the pre-filled declaration or in the Automatic IRS.

With the deadline approaching, the recommendation is clear: confirming outstanding invoices and validating the correct categories can make a difference in the refund amount or the amount to be paid. Leaving it until the last day increases the risk of failures that could cost money.
