These programs use a lot of electricity and water

Do you want to reduce the family budget on unnecessary expenses? So you should know which washing machine programs use an unnecessary amount of electricity and water.

The current economic situation leads many of us to think about where we could save money in the home and not throw money out the window unnecessarily, as they say. One way is to reduce energy costs. When it comes to laundry, a washing machine is a good place to start. It is not always necessary to use programs that are the biggest consumers of energy and, at the same time, excessive amounts of consumed water. Which one is it and what are some other low traffic tips?

Choosing the right temperature

Washing temperature has the most adverse effect on electricity consumption. These are programs that use a temperature of 90 °C. Using them doubles the energy consumption compared to washing at 30 and 40 °C. It is also a good idea to avoid the 60°C program, which consumes 50% more electricity than when washing at 30°C. Programs with a lower water heating temperature can easily remove even difficult stains and contribute to a longer life of the materials used.

Long washing time with prewash

In the same way, it is not advantageous to use unnecessarily long washing programs during the investigation. Long wash cycles mean longer water pumping times and more frequent drum rotation, which increases the consumption of both electricity and water. This also includes programs that include a pre-wash, which many models of washing machines currently offer. Although their use is very often recommended by the manufacturer, especially for particularly heavy soiling, it is not necessary to use them in every wash. Programs with a pre-wash increase energy consumption by up to 15 to 20%. It is much more advantageous to use fast wash cycles.

High spin speed

Spinning at high speeds is also a problem with excess electricity consumption. Although it is more effective for drying laundry, it is not always necessary. So use it only when washing materials that really require it. For wool, for example, low-speed programs of a maximum of 400 rpm are sufficient to maintain fiber quality. In addition, higher spin speeds can cause unwanted wrinkling in some types of clothing and fabrics. And what are other tips for saving the operation of the washing machine?

Always a full washing machine

It is always best to turn on the washing machine only when you have enough laundry to completely fill the recommended contents of the drum. This will save you 50 to 70% of electricity compared to half filling. If you don’t have much laundry and need to wash it, always use a program designed only to quickly wash a few items. Depending on the selected temperature, you will thus consume much less electricity than if you had started a normal program. Likewise, never overfill the washing machine with laundry.

Remove stains beforehand

If the laundry has stubborn stains, always remove them beforehand using a suitable product. This effectively avoids the use of energy-inefficient programs with high water consumption.

Sort the laundry

You can also save by sorting your laundry by color and type of material. This will avoid washing at high temperatures, as each type of laundry requires a different program.

Regular maintenance

Regular cleaning of the appliance, which must be freed of dirt and any limescale, is also very important in terms of savings. Thanks to your care, the washing machine will work much more efficiently.
