Drones crashed near Dubai airport, injuring four people, while ships were hit in or near the Strait of Hormuz on March 11 as Iran continued its campaign to disrupt oil markets and air and sea traffic.

Iran attacked commercial ships this Wednesday (11) across the Persian Gulf and targeted Dubai International Airport, intensifying a campaign to pressure the oil-rich region, amid escalating global energy concerns and American and Israeli airstrikes on the Islamic Republic.

Two Iranian drones hit an area near Dubai International Airport, which is home to the long-haul airline Emirates and is the world’s busiest for international travel. Four people were injured, but the flights were maintained, according to the Dubai Media Office.

Iran’s joint military command also announced it would begin attacking banks and financial institutions in the Middle East, a threat that would particularly endanger Dubai, home to many international financial institutions, as well as Saudi Arabia and the island kingdom of Bahrain.

Earlier, a shell struck a container ship off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, setting it on fire and forcing most of the crew to abandon the vessel, according to the British Army. Kuwait said its defenses shot down eight Iranian drones, and Saudi Arabia said it intercepted five drones heading to the Shaybah oil field.

Iran has effectively stopped cargo traffic through the strait by where about a fifth of the world’s oil is transported from the Persian Gulf towards the Indian Ocean. It also targets oil fields and refineries in Gulf Arab nations, aiming to generate enough global economic disruption to pressure the United States and Israel to end their attacks.

The United Nations Security Council plans to vote this Wednesday on a resolution sponsored by the Gulf Cooperation Council demanding that Iran stop attacking its Arab neighbors.

Israel said it has renewed attacks on Tehran, Iran’s capital, following multiple attacks on Tuesday that residents described as some of the heaviest during the war. Explosions were also heard in Beirut and southern Lebanon after Israel said it was hitting targets linked to the Iran-linked Hezbollah militant group.
