Montenegro’s “nonsense” – which glued Chega to CGTP. It’s a “democratic problem”

“It is often said that extremes touch each other. In this specific case it is like a glove”, said the prime minister about the labor package.

The revision of labor laws, the now famous employment package Work XXI, it’s giving work – and it’s making people talk.

The meeting on Monday ended. It was considered a defeat for the Government.

This Wednesday, Luis Montenegro spoke about the subject, shooting in several directions. He began by announcing that the Government will meet at the beginning of next week with social partners about the labor law.

The idea is not to “eternalize the discussion”, but to want to “exhaust all possibilities of rapprochement”.

At the end of the PSD parliamentary days, in Caminha, Montenegro commented: “We have to win this fight, with moderation, with a sense of responsibility, certainly, but with a sense of change, with a sense of courage to dare to do different”.

The Prime Minister continues to defend that reforming labor legislation will be synonymous with a more competitive economy.

Montenegro called for “institutional loyalty and a sense of responsibility” from all social partners, including UGT – who accused of having presented an “unfit proposal” during the negotiation process.

The Prime Minister even made a direct appeal to the UGT, asking that “don’t capitulate” facing CGTP – which traditionally does not agree on commitments in the context of social consultation.

CGTP-Chega

Montenegro then made a comparison between CGTP and Chegathe party that also asked the government to tear up the current proposed labor law review and start from scratch. CGTP and Chega asked the same: “to tear apart”.

It is often rightly said that extremes touch. In this specific case, it’s like a glove“, compared the prime minister.

“Also because (…) very few times an agreement is reached, the far-right party in Parliament is enough.”

The general secretary of CGTP, Tiago Oliveira, was not happy: it was an “authentic disparate”.

Tiago says in which Luís Montenegro revealed a “democratic problem” in these words, which must be contradicted.

The focus is on the truths, he claims: “We need to tell the truth to the Portuguese people and not go around with these costumes, with these soap operas, with this type of exits that hurt democracy and what is the good relationship that should exist”.

On RTP, Tiago Oliveira added: “I think we all have bad days. We have days when we say nonsense.”
