SHMÚ is sounding the alarm: Windstorm is affecting several regions of Slovakia

On Saturday, there is a risk of strong winds, especially in the west of Slovakia and in the mountains. Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) therefore issued first level warnings, which is valid until 19.00 h. Warnings are valid for high mountain areas until 6:00 p.m. SHMÚ informs about it on its website.

Meteorologists have issued warnings of strong winds for almost the entire Bratislava region, districts of Myjava, Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Levice, Nitra, Topoľčany, Zlaté Moravce, Hlohovec, Piešťany, Senica, Skalica, Trnava, Poprad and Tvrdošín.

In these districts, the occurrence of wind is expected, which will reach an average speed of around 45 kilometers per hour or in gusts a speed of 65 to 70 kilometers per hour. “This speed is a potential hazard for human activities. The predicted wind speed is normal for the given time of year and area, but it can cause minor damage,” added SHMÚ.

It also warns against wind in the mountains. The warnings concern the districts of Banská Bystrica, Brezno, Poprad and the districts of Dolný Kubín, Liptovský Mikuláš, Martin, Námestovo, Ružomberok, Tvrdošín and Žilina. “There is a rare occurrence of wind that will reach in the short term (in shocks) a speed of 110 to 125 kilometers per hour or an average speed of 70 and 85 kilometers per hour, which is quite a whirlwind,” meteorologists zoomed in.

The predicted wind speed is in the given time of year and area according to them common no represents a potential danger to human activities, especially for hiking or climbing.
