Some tourist destinations stand out for their natural characteristics and location, attracting visitors looking for peaceful environments and preserved landscapes. The island of Formentera, in the Balearics, is one of these cases, being known for its white sand beaches, transparent waters and proximity to Portugal, with short flights to the region.
Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic islands and has a calmer environment compared to other islands in the archipelago. It does not have an airport or large hotels, which limits large-scale tourism. Travel is often done by bicycle or scooter, and travel between beaches, coastal areas and restaurant areas is common throughout the day, according to the tourism blog.
How to get to Formentera from Portugal
Access to the island is via Ibiza, with direct flights from Lisbon and Porto operated by companies such as TAP, Vueling, EasyJet and Iberia. The air journey lasts approximately one and a half hours.
Upon arrival in Ibiza, the journey to the marina can be done by taxi or public transport. The sea connection to Formentera is provided by the companies Balearia, Trasmapi and Aquabus, with crossings taking between 30 and 40 minutes and prices varying between around 7 and 40 euros, depending on ticket conditions.
Transport and travel on the island
The port of La Savina is the only entry point into Formentera. Nearby, there are bicycle, scooter and car rental services, with scooters being one of the most used means.
The small size of the island allows you to visit several points of interest in short distances, including beaches, cliff areas, nature trails and salt marsh areas, as mentioned by the Viajar entre Viagens blog.
Most famous beaches in Formentera
Among the best-known beaches is Ses Illetes, located in the Ses Salines Natural Park, in the northern part of the island. This place is frequently mentioned in international classifications of European beaches, standing out for its clear sand and shallow waters. Despite its tourist visibility, the beach maintains variable occupancy levels depending on the time of year, being less frequented outside of the peak months.
On the west coast of the island, Cala Saona features a smaller beach, surrounded by rock formations and vegetation typical of the region. According to the same source, the sea presents generally calm conditions, being an area used by visitors looking for a prolonged stay on the beach.
Cavall d’en Borràs beach is located a short distance from the port of La Savina, making it one of the first options for those arriving on the island. The easy access, the presence of clean sand and areas with some natural shade make it a frequent choice for short-term visits.
Water temperature and bathing conditions
During the summer months, the water temperature in Formentera varies, on average, between 25 and 28 degrees. The beaches generally have sandy bottoms and conditions considered safe, without strong currents or steep drops in level, favoring the use of bathing.
According to the Viajar entre Viagens blog, the island has pedestrian trails and cycle paths that cross pine forest areas, open fields and areas with traditional buildings. There are also local markets where artisanal products, clothing and regional products are sold, including salt and prickly pear.
Best time to visit
The months of June and September present more moderate levels of demand, maintaining suitable weather conditions for outdoor activities. During July and August, demand increases, although there are still less frequented areas. It is advisable to plan your visit in advance, including booking accommodation and preparing suitable equipment such as sun protection and footwear for different types of terrain.
