Former FBI director who exposed Russian interference in 2016 dies

Trump celebrated the death of Robert Mueller, who investigated cyber attacks against Hillary Clinton in the elections

Robert Mueller, former director of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), died this Saturday (March 21, 2026) at the age of 81. Mueller led the investigation that documented Russia’s interference in the 2016 US presidential elections and contacts between Russian agents and the campaign of Donald Trump (Republican Party), elected for the first time that year. The FBI investigation exposed what Mueller described as a Russian campaign of cyberattacks and propaganda to sow discord in the United States. The objective was to affect the image of the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, and boost Trump, the candidate who would be Russia’s favorite.

Following the release of the FBI report, 34 people in the US were formally charged with election interference. Among those charged were several Trump associates, Russian intelligence officers and 3 Russian companies. Mueller did not indict Trump and Russia denied interfering in the elections.

“Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can’t harm innocent people anymore!”said Trump in a post this Saturday (21 March).

Career at the FBI

Mueller took over as director of the FBI after the attacks of September 11, 2001. A decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, he remained in the position for 12 years.

Mueller retired as FBI director in 2013. Four years later, he was recalled to public service by a senior Justice Department official. He took over as special counsel to lead the investigation into Russia’s election interference. The appointment took place after the dismissal of James Comey, then director of the FBI, by Trump.
