Policial federal é atingido por flecha em operação contra garimpo ilegal

A 31-year-old man was hit by an arrow in the left arm during an operation to combat illegal mining in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, in Roraima. The incident occurred last Thursday (19), in a difficult-to-access region marked by the resistance of invaders and the complexity of the Amazon relief.

Injured during the incursion, the agent received immediate care from colleagues from the Ready Intervention Group (GPI), the Federal Police’s elite unit specialized in high-risk tactical operations. The agents immobilized the arm and ensured that the arrow remained stable until the officer was transported to the General Hospital of Roraima (HGR), in the capital Boa Vista.

Medical Procedure

At the hospital, imaging tests revealed that the arrow went through the arm and was embedded in the bone. Despite the severity, the medical team found that the officer was in a stable condition and had no signs of shock. He was taken to the surgical center to remove the object and remains hospitalized under observation and medical care.

Conflict Scenario

Raposa Serra do Sol is the second largest indigenous land in Brazil in terms of population, home to more than 26 thousand indigenous people, according to the 2022 IBGE Census. However, the 1.7 million hectare territory has been the target of intense devastation by illegal miners. Local leaders denounce that the invaders have used explosives for mineral extraction and promoted the recruitment of young people from the communities.

Located on the triple border between Brazil, Venezuela and Guyana, the region covers the municipalities of Normandia and Uiramutã. The rugged terrain, made up of mountains such as Pacaraima and Mount Roraima, concentrates rich mineral deposits and river sources, which attracts criminal activity and makes permanent supervision by federal authorities difficult.
