Marco Rubio: It is in the interest of all G7 countries to press for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that it was in the interest of all G7 countries to press for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, currently blocked by Iran. This was reported by the AFP agency, writes TASR.

  • Marco Rubio declared that the G7 must exert pressure to reopen Hormuz.
  • The Strait of Hormuz remains blocked by Iran, which has severely affected the global economy.
  • Donald Trump says Tehran wants the deal more than Washington.
  • Rubio called the anti-Iran offensive of the US and Israel a service to the world.

Rubio is on his way to the G7 meeting

“It’s in their interest to help,” Rubio said before flying to France, where he will attend the second day of talks on Friday among the heads of diplomacy of the world’s seven most advanced economies. It is Rubio’s first foreign trip since the US-Israeli attacks on Iran were launched on February 28.

Rubio added that there had been progress in talks with Iran. He declined to speculate if or how they might end up. “Mediator countries are reporting and progress has been made,” the minister said.

The closure of the strait has affected the global economy

Britain, France, Japan, Canada, Germany and Italy, as the remaining members of the G7, on Thursday signaled hope for a diplomatic solution to the situation in Iran. It affected the world economy as a result of the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of oil and liquefied natural gas supplies usually pass.

US President Donald Trump said at a cabinet meeting on Thursday that Tehran wants to reach an agreement more than Washington. According to him, the American military operation is taking place faster than planned and he again criticized NATO.

Rubio: The president is doing the whole world a favor with the offensive against Iran

Rubio said at the same meeting that US allies should be grateful to Trump for the offensive against Iran, conducted in coordination with Israel. “The president is not only serving the United States and Americans. He is doing it for the whole world,” he declared.

Before leaving for the G7 meeting, Rubio was also asked about Russia’s support for Iran. According to his own words, he thinks that Moscow is primarily focused on its war against Ukraine, not on helping Tehran, Reuters reported.
