Collapse of structure at stadium in Peru leaves one dead and 60 injured

The collapse of a structure at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, in Lima, on Friday night (3), caused the death of at least one person and left 60 injured, Peruvian authorities reported.

The death of a fan was confirmed by the commander of the Volunteer Fire Department, Marcos Pajuelo, in statements to the television channel Canal N. Pajuelo added that authorities from other institutions arrived at the scene to deal with the situation.

The Peruvian Ministry of the Interior declared, via social media, that the National Police had established a security perimeter to facilitate care for the injured.

This occurred during a support event for Alianza Lima fans. The team would play a classic against Universitario on Saturday night (4). Pajuelo said the situation occurred in , located in the neighborhood of La Victoria, also known as Matute.

According to the commander, the events occurred when the fans were performing a “bandeiraço”, a celebration that preceded the match.

“It was an unfortunate incident that occurred when a large number of fans were practicing flag-waving for upcoming sporting events. We don’t know the possible cause, but when we arrived, we found a large crowd and many injured people. We quickly triaged them to identify and separate them according to the type of injury so that we could immediately provide first aid,” he explained.

The statement expressed regret for what happened, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and those injured, and informing that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“We are cooperating fully and transparently with the competent authorities, in order to contribute to clarifying the facts under investigation with total transparency,” declared the club.
