The chaotic moment that the Italian team is experiencing has gained another episode.
After the European playoff, the European press reported that the Italian players had asked the federation for a reward if the team qualified for the World Cup.
According to the newspaper The Republica group of athletes approached members of the technical committee to find out if there would be payment if Italy managed to go to the World Cup. The total value would be 300 thousand euros, which would give around 10 thousand euros (approximately R$60 thousand) for each player.
However, the athletes’ attitude was not well received internally, as it was a crucial game for the country. Gattuso, the team’s coach, intervened in the situation and explained to the players that classification should be a priority.
On the field, Italy disappointed again. After a 1-1 draw in normal time, the Azzurri lost to Bosnia on penalties, 4-1, and were once again left out for the third consecutive edition (2018, 2022 and 2026).
