The goal of a thousand goals is known. Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41 years old, continues to play and one of the few things left for him to achieve is the historic four-digit mark. However, there is controversy regarding the number of goals scored by the Portuguese international.
The newspaper reported this Wednesday that Ronaldo scored six goals in a tournament that is not recognized as official by FIFA. This is the Arab Club Champions Cup, a title won by Al Nassr in 2023.
The entity that oversees world football considers this championship a pre-season tournament, so instead of 967 goals, CR7 can have 961. This is the number that appears on platforms such as Transfermarkt, which specializes in international football statistics and transfers.
“These six goals that we did not count were scored in a competition that was played in 2023/24. The issue is that this evidence is not officially recognized by FIFA. (…) Ideally, FIFA itself would come forward to clarify this situation”, says Gonçalo Tristão Santos, responsible for Transfermarkt in Portugal, speaking to the newspaper A Bola.
