PT promotes 8th congress with an eye on alliance with the “liberal right”

The party expects to gather around 600 representatives at the event, which starts this Friday (24th April) and ends on Sunday (26th April)

The Workers’ Party begins this Friday (April 24, 2026) its 8th national congress, in Brasília. The acronym expects to gather around 600 representatives at the event, which will be held until Sunday (26 April).

The expectation is to discuss the political situation, the party’s electoral tactics in 2026 and Brazil’s role in the world. Read the schedule (PDF – 99 kB).

In the party program proposal, there is a defense of an alliance with other sectors of society to the project defended by the PT. “This includes the liberal, democratic right, capable of joining this project focusing on the defense of democracy and national sovereignty, a new role for Brazil in the world and the defeat of authoritarianism represented by the extreme right”he states.

The PT also says that “the distinction between authoritarian extreme right and liberal right is decisive for political tactics, even if it does not eliminate structural divergences around the development model, income distribution and the role of the State”. Read the (PDF – 1 MB) of the document.

In this edition of the congress, the PT makes reference in memory a Clara Charf and Sonia Braga, activists who helped found the acronym. There will be a posthumous tribute at the opening table at 7pm.

Charf on November 3, 2025. She was married to former deputy and guerrilla Carlos Marighella (1911-1969). Braga was president of the PT in Ceará and national secretary of Organization for the party. on March 13, 2026.

PT’S DIRECTIONS

The acronym 46 years since its foundation on February 10th. Says you want “strengthen its roots and expand debates about the future”.

Vice-president of the PT, the deputy (SP) will moderate the opening of the work. The national president of the PT, , will be responsible for an analysis of the situation. There will also be an exhibition of draft resolutions from the party’s working groups.

There is a reform of the Judiciary and changes in the Armed Forces. The event will discuss these and other proposals.

PT resumes the event on Saturday (25 April), starting at 8am. The main plenary program includes a seminar on multilateralism and global governance, discussions on draft resolutions and cultural presentations. There will also be thematic rooms, guided by themes such as social justice, sovereignty and democracy.

The president (PT) has repeatedly criticized the head of the North American Executive, Donald Trump (Republican).

LULA

Lula is expected to participate in the closing ceremony on Sunday, at 9:30 am. At the time, the party will also launch a campaign to expand its membership base.
