New medical expertise rules eliminate the need for insured people to be present at agencies
The Ministry of Social Security and the INSS modernized the rules for granting benefits due to temporary incapacity (formerly sickness benefit), eliminating the need for the insured person to attend agencies.
Now, medical certificates recommending leave for up to 90 days can be approved exclusively via document analysis. Previously, this limit was 60 days.
The measure is part of the new version of Atestmed, which allows benefits to be granted only by analyzing the medical certificate and examinations. The entire procedure is handled from home, without the need to go to an agency. The flow works digitally.
How it works
The citizen accesses the Meu INSS portal or application, attaches certificates and complementary exams and waits for remote analysis by medical experts. There is no need to schedule or travel to a physical unit. The experts issue an opinion and the result of the expertise will also be informed by Meu INSS.
Attestation Requirements
The INSS reinforces that the medical certificate must be legible and must contain:
- patient’s full name;
- date of issue;
- ICD (International Classification of Diseases) or extensive diagnosis;
- doctor’s signature and stamp with CRM;
- estimated rest period.
If the document has erasures or incomplete information, the system may still refer the insured person to an in-person examination, but the general rule is digital simplification.
The change represents an advance in the modernization of the agency and promises to provide more comfort to workers facing health problems.
