The suspect purchased his weapons legally, in acquisitions made in the years 2023 and 2025, as reported by a law enforcement agent this Sunday.
Purchases included a semi-automatic pistol calibre .38 and a shotgun calibre 12.
According to authorities involved in the investigation, . As part of regular protocols, the names of all guests at the hotel where the event took place were checked against government databases.
Records obtained by investigators indicate that on October 6, 2023, the suspect purchased the pistol at a store in Southern California. On August 17, 2025, he purchased the shotgun at another commercial establishment in his hometown, Torrance, also in California.
Both acquisitions were made legally and required the suspect to provide his information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, .
The purpose of the procedure is to confirm that the buyer is not wanted by the courts, is not subject to restrictive orders and does not have criminal convictions that would prevent the purchase.
Additionally, the suspect was required to complete Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Form 4473, known as the Firearm Transaction Record. The document was presented to the sellers on both occasions and submitted to the same system, which determines whether the sale should be approved, postponed or denied.
Under California law, the purchaser was also required to comply with a 10-day waiting period before picking up both the pistol and shotgun.
